Since reasonably priced Windows laptops are now available with nVidia GPUs that can game at 1080 I have no idea why anyone would buy an external GPU for what will doubtless be a suboptimal experience.
I looked at the Akito specs and from what I see the intention is for use with Windows and only with specific machines.
In the Hackintosh world where I have, ahem, dabbled one cannot simply plug an nVidia card into a machine without experiencing serious issues, aka kernel panic, because the operating system is not automatically keyed to recognize that device-Apple has not sold an nVidia gpu since maybe Core 2 duo days. I could bring it into Apple and see what they could do, but I read that they offer a 300+ fix for it since it is out of warranty and the eligibility period has ended.

I can assure you that the vanilla OSX video drivers are plain ugly on 900/1000 series nVidia GPUs.Įven in Windows where AMD/nVidia GPUs and their drivers are more powerful, sophisticated and standards compliant than Apple GPUs and drivers the GPU does not notably accelearate PS/LR. I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro (MBP) with OS X Mavericks that started getting GPU panic issues where it would crash and restart almost daily. The latter are better than what Apple provides for the GPUs it uses in its machines but it hardly matters. Research what is in and particularly what is not in OSX video drivers, even those supplied by nVidia.
